Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She was hired in 1999 and established her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
